What I Did

From Darkness to Light–Fancy Way of Saying We Changed a Closet Light Fixture

My husband loves that I am doing my “Beckie Lives and Learns” blog, etc. “Why?” you may wonder. My husband is very handy and likes to tinker around and fix things. I am now a much more captive and willing audience. He knows that I am now willing to try to understand and learn what he is doing (as opposed to just walking away to do something else). This afternoon, we (term used loosely–I held a flashlight, watched, and listened) changed the light fixture in my bedroom closet because it would no longer stay on. I was ready to learn how to do what I envisioned would be a fairly straightforward task. I wasn’t quite so lucky. A little bit of “Macgyver-ing” took place. The fixture my husband picked up did not quite fit the globe that was used with the previous fixture. After some steps (this part was a bit of a black hole to me–the “Macgyver-ing), he was able to install the rest of the fixture which combined the old and new pieces. I did manage to understand and pick up a few pointers along the way so that I don’t feel quite so clueless when it comes to the world of light-fixture swapping, but I certainly would not have been able to do this one by just watching videos. One of these days, hopefully in the foreseeable future, I will be able to fix something myself in my house due to my training with my husband! : )

Replacement light fixture.
This is the fixture my husband bought to replace the old one.

The bulb in place in the newly created light fixture. Can you see that it looks different from the new one in the previous photo?
Globe light fixture
This may not be the most exciting photo, but you can see the globe portion of the fixture.

My apologies for making what should have been a very straightforward task more complicated. If I had actually looked at the light fixture, instead of assuming that it was just a light bulb screwed into a basic base, I would’ve picked up the right kind of replacement. I probably would’ve even upgraded the closet light to a more efficient LED style, too!

Oh well, it was “one of those things,” where the desire to get the job done inexpensively (the replacement base was less than three bucks) trumped the urge to waste time I didn’t have and go return the first purchase in favor of “the right one,” lol! In the process, you learned a little bit about how to take two unrelated fixtures and combine them into a functional solution (that looks exactly like the original)! Plus, we got to recycle the old base and globe, instead of adding them to a landfill!

    Love you!
    Steve
