What I Made

Yogurt Drops

Now that I have officially “put myself out there” with a blog, I am more inspired to try new things on a more frequent basis.  When I don’t have time for a large project or have any formal activity planned, I figure that I can just look up a “life hack” and see how well it works.

I recently found a life hack on Pinterest (1000lifehacks.com).  This is what it said: “Spoon some yogurt into a plastic bag. Poke a small hole in the bottom and squeeze small dots onto a cookie sheet.  Freeze for an hour. A great healthy snack.” This seemed easy enough to try.

I filled my zip-lock bag with some vanilla yogurt, cut the corner, and made my dots.

Yogurt and a bag.
Step one–spoon yogurt into a bag. I love simple steps!

I don’t know about you, but there is absolutely no way that I can fit an entire cookie sheet into my freezer in its current state.  Instead, I piped my dots onto a small plastic plate. The yogurt drops did freeze really well. They also froze really well onto the plate.  After scratching the plate with a regular knife (it was an old plate, so I wasn’t too irritated), I managed to pry some off with a plastic knife.  Had I waited a while after taking the plate out of the freezer to allow for some thawing, I might have had an easier time, but, honestly, I was impatient.  The yogurt dots were really good! Of course, they tasted just like the yogurt, but, they were really quite refreshing. They do, however, disappear very quickly.  (My daughter and I are now both big fans of them!) I had made another plateful, this time covering the plate with wax paper. This worked well. I had also tried using Pam spray, and another time I rubbed some olive oil onto a plastic plate.  The Pam worked. The olive oil did not help as much. This was not done in scientific fashion, and I have no plans on further studying this. I don’t know if the oil did not work because of the amount used, the type of plate, and/or something else.  I will simply stick with the wax paper method.

Yogurt dots before going into the freezer. Yes, this is an old plate. (My kids are now teens, yet I still have the plate. Hey, it came in handy!)

The only issue I have with using my small plate which I can fit into my freezer is that it does limit the number of dots I can prepare and freeze at a time. Plus, unlike packaged frozen foods, I can’t just squeeze it into any space where the plate might fit.  I have to protect the dots from being smeared all over the plate or another item!

This “life hack” was a definite success that I will continue to implement and enjoy!  I will make a habit out of checking out some life hacks, will see what I can try, and will let you know how well they do or do not work.
